Gramophone Award Best Opera Recording 2010
Recorded in the Bridgewater Hall last May, this was the climax of Sir Mark Elder’s 10th year as Hallé music director. The Hallé played gloriously for Elder, particularly the brass and strings, and the contribution by members of four choirs ensured that the response to Hagen’s summoning of the vassals could be heard all over the north of England. Siegfried and Brunnhilde were well sung and characterised by Lars Cleveman and Katarina Dalayman, both in lyrical voice. Almost the finest single portrayal was Susan Bickley’s Waltraute in the scene when she tries to persuade Brunnhilde to return to the fold. This was singing of very high quality and unbelievably her first time in the role. –Michael Kennedy, The Sunday Telegraph
